LA Angels over Boston Red Sox 7-5. The Angels crushed Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka to the tune of six runs on seven hits in five plus innings. The small ball team went big ball as Casey Kotchman hit a two-run homer and Torii Hunter hit an Earl Weaver to account for five of the six runs in that fateful sixth inning. The Angels relievers did just enough to get the win for Jered Weaver who went 5 2/3 innings giving up three runs on six hits and three walks. Francisco Rodriguez despite giving up a solo homer to Manny Ramirez notched his 44th save of the season. The Angels have now defeated the Red Sox six consecutive times, the best record and best road record in baseball.

San Francisco Giants defeat LA Dodgers 7-6. The Dodgers had a chance to tie the Diamondbacks for first place and be over .500 for the first time in what seem like eons. Things didn’t look good when the Giants had a stranglehold of the game leading 7-0 in the fifth inning, but the Dodgers stormed back with a five-run fifth and one-run sixth. If you have Greg Gibson in your fantasy umpire league, you get credited with two ejections: Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake and manager Joe Torre both in the eighth inning.
Notable Notes
The baseball trading deadline looms this week, and for a second straight year switch hitting first baseman Mark Teixeira is on the block. The Atlanta Braves are willing to part with Teixeira, who becomes a free agent this offseason, to get a first baseman they can keep for the next several seasons. While the Diamondbacks seem to the team that’s most likely to get Teixeira, he would be a perfect fit for the Dodgers.

True it would mean letting go of James Loney, but having a two gold-glove first baseman who hits for power would more than make up for losing Loney. Teixeira is batting .281 with an OPS of .896, an OPS+ of 137 and 20 homers. Loney is batting .302 with an OPS of .827, an OPS+ of 113 and nine homers. The only way this deal would work is if the Dodgers would be willing to spend the money to sign Teixeira who is 28 years old.
Which brings up the problem.
According to LA Times Bill Shaikin, the Dodgers front office is a mess. Shaikin hints that Dodger owner Frank McCourt just isn’t willing to let Ned Colletti spend money given the returns on Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre and Jason Schmidt. With Colletti seemingly in limbo, it makes any possibility of this trade happen nonexistent. And let’s not even mention Teixeira’s agent Scott Boras. Yes, that Scott Boras who represents the Princess JD Drew.
